Is ESP needed in a car?

Right i'm thinking of buying a new ford fiesta. The ESP however is optional, and even after looking at various websites and brochures i'm still not entirely sure how it works or if i will need it. I have been driving for 2 years and live in London so no icy or skid prone roads. THX
