During which stage of meiosis does the synapse and crossing over take place and why does it happen?

Zygotene stage of the Prophase I. It adds variations to the gene pool so that it becomes more and more adapted to the changing environment. This leads to evolution of better adapted races first and ultimately to new species. This means that it is because of synapse and crossing over that u are there to ask questions and i am here to answer them..
